Herb Ritts' (1952–2002) iconic work "Stephanie, Cindy, Christy, Tatjana, Naomi, Hollywood, 1989."

Ritts defined the Supermodel era, creating images that transcended celebrity portraiture and blurred the line between fashion photography and fine art — a legacy cemented by major retrospectives at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (1996) and the Getty Museum, Los Angeles (2012).

Born and raised in LA, Ritts drew from beaches, deserts, and late-afternoon light to produce bold shadows and warm tones. Influenced by Man Ray, Edward Weston, and Irving Penn, he fused Classical sculpture with Modernist photography into a style uniquely his own.

The 1989 image originated as a Rolling Stone cover shoot. Ritts arranged four models nude, limbs intertwined — Christy Turlington, not originally present, was called by the others and joined for the final frames, completing the iconic composition.

The five models:

  • Stephanie Seymour
  • Cindy Crawford
  • Christy Turlington
  • Tatjana Patitz
  • Naomi Campbell

As Crawford said: "The way Herb Ritts photographed you was the way you wanted the world to see you."
